During 1922 (says Mr. Geo. J. Scholey in Natureland several new facts rosealed the cuckoo in a most unfavourable light, pursu ing her evil ways with a deliber ate and ruthless cuoning hither. 10 unsuspected: One bird on April 26, a few days following her arrival, deliberately destroyed sets of incubated Wagtaila eges and young birds which were too far advanced for her purpose, cau- sing the foeterers to rebuild nesis in which she could deposit her
own eggs at the right time To prove her deliberate intention to cause the Wagtail to forsake ita nest, in an instance being unable to get to a clutch of incubated egga (so restricted as the entr 'ance hole), she remained outside std frustrated all endeavous of the Wagtail to enter. The egga became chilled and the Wektail deserted a new nest was immedi-- ately built and received the egg of the cuckoo a week after the desertion of the rat. This was typical of her behaviour through- out the senso, and I had sus pected it for several years pa t with other cuckoos Is was also found that where two nests of her fosterer were in the same: condi- tionesy each containing four erus-be would remove su early egu from the nest intended to be last user. This shows remarkable instinct in-influencing the fasterer to lay a further egg and so give her the nest on squal terms: of incubation.
