Mrs. Urquhart had been in in. different bealth for some time, and her husband's death last year was a considerable blow to ber She had passed her fiftieth year, and was not a robust ludy, so that ber illness has been, the reason for great family anxiety, culminat ing in her passing away at 8.30 on Tuesday evening.

The deep sympathy of a large circle of friends will go out to the children. Two of the boys are in Canton and three in Hongkong. CULT OF CREMATION,

Disposals of the Dearin China.

At the first blush the suggestion of creation for Chinese would seem to indicate the greatest of all the changes that China has done or attempted since the era of the famous Edicts of Kwang-su in 1898. Yet we are told a body of Chiness merchants has sugges- ed this form of disposal of the dead, ao za to relieve the congès- tion of burial grounds, in which term nearly all of China is com- priced. This matter touches one! of the strongest and most decply implanted beliefs of the Chinese respecting the future after they aro dead. China has been describ ed as one huge cemetery, and we know the trouble that has arisen over Fong-shui when it was, e37, the question of a railway coming along and displacing some of the ancestors' graves,

We remember also that, with some tact, and the requisite num- ber of dollare, mattere could usually be arranged, and the line carried along the survey that bad been rosde.

There is no 'doubt the the Chinese, as a race, are most deep ly religious in this matter, which has, indeed, formed a blight on the living generation. The vene- ration is carried to such an extent that until recent times, in con- junction with the style of educa tion, it had a most cramping effect on intellect and develop

INVESTIGATION INTO COAL RATES.

Washington, July 11,

A Sydney message says that ex-Premier Hughes, in the course of a striking warning in the Sydney Telegraph, as regards Australia's empty spaces, discusses Japan's need of an outlet for her surplus population. In relation to Australia he saye is hurdly Australia, whose great need is population, to complain if Japan does not consent to impose checks to an increase of her own. If she does not, nothing is surer than that before many years have passed her overcrowded and half-starved millions will make a grand trek. He asks, if these millions knock at cur doors how can we deny them admittance? He declares that it is more in the interest of the greater part of the world that these millions should settle bere and produce wealth than that they should remain idle and die. He concludes by saying: A little time is still ours wherein to fill our vacant spaces with men and women of our own race and to do all that is needful to anake gord our claim to this great and fruitful.novel-writing.
