A curious horticultural freak ay be observed in a garden" at Templeton (Pembrokeshire), where an apple tree has a black currant bush growing out of the trunk. THE PROMISED LAND.
New York, July %. Sixteen steamships, carrying over eighty thousand immigrants, anchored outside the harbour and awaited the stroke of midnight on Saturday, 30th June, when they dashed into harbour to land their Three official immigrants before the July quota was exhausted. watchers timed the race to prevent dispute as to which was first to reach quarantine.
Cramped conditions at Ellis Island, where only sixteen hundred beds are available, are expected to add to the misery of the immigrants, many of whom will undoubtedly be deported, owing to the excessive numbers seeking admission. The July quotas of at least seven coun- tries will be exhausted on the first day of the month..
There is equal keenness on land as by sea on the part of New York immigrants to enter the United States before the July quota“ ia exhausted. Thousands lined the Canadian border and rushed across as the first day of the new month broke and disorganised the official arrangements. Ships from Asia and Africa brought more immigrants than the quota allows.

THE TREVESSA'S SURVIVORS.
Rodriguez, July 2
But for a keen lookout, and the prompt measures taken aboard- the Government supply ship Secunder,, which calls here five times a year from Mauritius, Mr. Foster and his companions from the Trevessa would no longer have been able to master the situation, but must have been dashed to destruction on wicked reefs. As. it nя the was the rescue was only effected in the nick of time Secunder's arrival was delayed owing to the presence of plague in Mauritius, otherwise she would have departed on her return journey before the Trevessa's boat hove in sight, The Secunder was on the point of starting when, at night fall, out of a cloud laden gxy and a boisterous sea, a policeman, T. Gretry, who was on uty aboard, espied a craft making straight for the reefs only a hundred yards. away. The constable's hailing shout evoked the reply: "shipwrecked; twenty-three days at sen." Constable Gretry with a fellow constable and three fishermen Jumped into a beat and once alongside told the Trevessa's boat "down.sal" so as to avert danger ahead. The rescuing boat hastened to Mr. Foster's aid and asked for two volun- teers to help to tow the bout back. It was found that the volunteers were too weak, so one fisherman thereupon climbed into the Trevessa's boat and with an amazing display of sheer strength directed her toward the jetty. All the survivors departed on the warship Colombo bound for Mauritius, practically recovered.
thanksgiving service was held before they embarked.
