CHINESE CRUSOES.

How the Sulu People Benefit.

Sanggling Chinese fato Aus- tralia, writes T. Dusbabin in the Sydney San, is not the game it used to be in the 80's when Cap tain John Boynton, "the war. maker,"ontered into an agreement according to his own statement, with a leading Chinese merebant in Sydney, under which he landed several cargoes of Chinese on the coast of New South Wales at £100 a bead. Not long ago there was

proposel to form under the rose," zyndicate tɔ bring Chinese over from Timor to the northern coast, using a fast craft for the work. But in the depressed state of things in the north the game did not seem to be worth the risk, and the project fell through, But, accord- ing to a returned · traveller from Borneo, the Sulus of the islands between Borneo and the Philip- pines do a brisk business with Chinese who desire to be smuggl ed into the Philippines.

Are

In the old days the chief indus. try of the Solus was piracy; but in these degenerate days they find smuggling less dangerous if pot as profitable. It is a long way from Borneo to the Philippines and there is always the risk of trouble with the Americans at the end of the voyage. But the Salus knows trick worth two of that. Their rule is payment in advance, the Chinese are either made to walk the plank marooned on some of the "desert islands " that abound in those seas. This sim- ple method saves a lot of time and trouble, and has the ad- ditional advantage that the Sulus naturally keep for their trouble whatever cash or possessions the pasengers bave with them. One gathers that by this time most of the handy islands north of Borneo are full of Chinese Crusoe. But there is no danger of the supply of Chinese running out..
