Hongkong Government's Generous Help.
The liberal financial support that is likely to be received from the Government should allay the fears of losses by Chinese mer- chants intending to participate in the British Empire Trade Exhibi- tion in 1924. The Government's attitude with regard to the ecn- cessions applied for by the mer- chants was fully explained at a meeting of the Exhibition Com- mittee of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon. Mr. Li Po-kwai occu- pled the chair.

hibitors. In deference to the wish of the Chamber he also mentioned the concessions desired by the Chinese. As the meeting WAS probably aware, the Government would defray all freight expenses incurred. As regarded passage money and living expenses lacur red by exhibitors, which the Chinese had asked the Govern- ment to defray, he understood from the Hon. Mr. P. H. Holyoak (Chairman of the Joint Committee of the two Chambers), that the | Government would probablyaccede to the request. He (the speaker) approximated the amount required to cover the freight, fares and boarding expenses at about $122,000, The
Government, he understood, not only would give that amount. but would give more. It was probable that a sun of $150,000 would be given. the amount over and above the required sum to be used to com- pensate exhibitors in the vent of losses. In addition to this the Government would in all proba- bility set aside $100,000 as a gua- rantee fund against losses, this to be provided on condition that the Chinese Chamber undertook to raise $50,000 for the same pur- pose.
Government's Liberal Policy." I would be agreed that the Government was sparing no ex- pense in making the Hongkong section in the Exhibition a suci cess when it was remembered that in addition to providing $230,000,| the Government would have to bear the expense of erecting the houses for the exhibitors, which would amount to $400.000. Act- ing in the suggestion of the Secre- tary of the Chamber (Mr. Ip Lan- huen) a letter would shortly be seat to the Government asking that arrangements be made with the Customs authorities with a view to securing exemption from taxes of goods sent to the Exhibi- tion from the interior of China.
Mr. Kotewall said his atten- tion had been drawn to a recent leading article in the S. C. M. Post, in connection with the Bri- tish Empire Exhibition. The journal was apparently labouring
