The subject of Asia's claim to migration into Australia is dealt with by Prof JUW. Grekory in the April issue of the Empire Ferien.
Prof. Gregory, it will be remembered, paid a visit to South- West China nat long since, and he gives us soms of the fruits of. Aus- tralia needs population, but in her opinion it must be of the right kind. She is represented as having 1.5 souls to the square mile, whilst some provinces of Chine run into hundreds. "Marcbing through some of the still wasted valleys of south. westera Chins and over the in- tervening down country we learnt to realise how wide ara the empty spaces in tropical and |sub-tropical Asia, Most Chinese would prefer to settle as market gardeners in the suburbs, of a large Australian city than in a remote valley in Yannan; but they would. find the waste spaces of inner Apabralia far less attractive than their own empty western valleys." The Professor gives it as his. opinion that, who drie bas such, large fertile territory undevelop ed, it has no claim to unrestricted jemigration to Australia. In time south eastern Asia will be'fully peopled with Asiatics, and one of the political problems of the day is the apparently irresistible westward advance of Chinese do- minioo. It is carried out by peaceful penetration, and is na... ́ turally slow, but Chinese history shows it highly probable that say abandonment of parts of the western borderlands will only be temporary.
The westward limit will de- pend on political developments,
