The trials and tribulations of a staff of some 2,000,000 census takers to find out there were approximately 319,000,000 people in India in 1921, have been related by J. Marton, census commisioner. for India.
The employment of this huge army of soumarators, said Mr. Marten, was necessitated by the fact that, owing to the illiteracy of the population, the employment of the househoïder as enumerator of his household was "Im-" possibla.. He told of instances of sanmerators being stabbed by suspicious Hindus, who consider- ed the census takers too inquisi tire. Some of the natives, on the other hand, resorted to violence when bribery failed to induce the census takers to make false entries showing that the nativas enjoyed higher stations in the fsocial scale than was really the
case.
The census, Mr. Martens aid showed a gain of 12 per cent over the population of 1911. The average density of population over the whole of India was 177 to the square mile.
The maximumdensity of any province was in Bengal, where there were found to be 608 to the square mile.
