As pointed out the other day, this is quite wrong.] To representative of the Ob server he has summed up his main recollections as follow:-

"I can remember the days of! Darwin, Borrow, Dean Milman, Mr. Gladstone, Lord Campbell, who wrote the "Lives of the Chancellors," and of whom Lord Brougham said, "Lord Campbell has added & ew terror to death." Then there was Dean Stanley, whose hand-writing was a terror to the printer. On one occasion my father could not make out & passage in an important letter which he had received from him, and he wrote back to ask him to tell him what he meant. "If you can't make it out I'm sure I can't" Dean Stanley replied. "I think," be added, "I meant to say so and so;" but the second letter was almost as difficult to read as the fira!.

In the early days, when I first began, we still had the old custom of salo dianers once a year. I have known on one of these occasions 19,000 copies of one of Dr. Smith's books were sold in a quar- ter of an hour.

But these names do not begio to exhaust the traditions of the house in the last fifty years. Dr. Smiles's "Self Help" had appeared in 1860, but "Character" only in 1871, and his "Thrift" falls two years within Mr. Murray's pers Bonal association with the family business. It was Mr. Murray's father who, in 1836, started the famous series of Murray's guide! books by himself writing the Handbook for Holland."
