The Elimination of Dust. Dr. Halford Ross gives all interesting account of a London experiment in the prevention of phthisis. Phthisia had occurred in the printing department of the Bank of England. Therefore, when the large new building in Old-street; E. C., was nearing con- pletion, in the autumn of 1920, it was suggested by the head of the department that a vacuum- cleaning plant, with pipes carried. to every floor, having a central exhaust engine with dust containers in the basement, might be a satisfactory means of keeping the Dow premises thoroughly clean. and reports have been kept of all cases of illnese, even of minor ailments: and in order to make the experiment free from error, similar records were kept st another new factory naar London, which was engaged on similar work, but in which such cleaners had not been instituted. Two years' careful observations are therefore available.
During the first year the new factory had five fresh cases, one of which has since proved fatal. It was then extra cleaned, and during the second year there were one. But the Old-street premises of the Bank of England, in the heart of London, bave remained {free from new dis- are throuzhou: the two years, and the zvezage number of days lost per annum per person owing to ill-health (estimated as eight in factories generally) has fallen to between Eve and six days in these works. Dr. Halford Ross's conclusion in that the constant, systematic limination of dust should lead to the curtailment not only of consumption but of many minor illnesses.
