For mora than half a century he has served the Royal House, and especially King Edward and Queen Alex- andra, with a rare combination of chivalrous loyalty and practi- leal wisdom. When he joined the Household of the then Prince of Wales in 1872 he had a re- putatian both as a gallent leader of irregular horre and as a tried administrator, but thenceforward his life became completely identitied with that of his Royal Master and his family. She even insisted on being present in 1991 when the Prince of Wales visited her village of Leyland and inspected ex-Service men.
