The Sheriff's Ordinance, 1873.
This Ordinance was passed in pursuance of a Resolution of the Legislative Council (See Hongkong Government Gazette of 28th September 1873, page 499) to provide for the Payment of an annual Salary to the Sheriff in lieu of fees.
The question was attended with much difficulty, because whether the Sheriff be paid by a Salary or by Fees (which at present do not average less than $180 to $200 a year), his emoluments must be out of all proportion to the very serious risks to which he is exposed to in the discharge of his duties.
