for 1873 the Members
unanimous
of the
Legislative Council expressed a
opinion that the Sheriff should be paid by salary instead of by fees. In that opinion I entirely concurred so far as principle is concerned, and consequently after discussion of the principle of the legislation required, I laid a draft Bill on the Table, which had been prepared by the Attorney General
Mr Pauncefote's report, which I enclose, explains what took place at the introduction of the
measure, and the careful investigation
of the details of the Bill by a
Special Committee of the Legislative Council.
I have only to add that, by
Executive Council,
the advice of which
I have for the present, subject to Your Lordship's approval, fixed the Salary of the Sheriff (Mr Wodehouse) at £100 per
annum.
