for 1873 the Members

unanimous

of the

Legislative Council expressed a

opinion that the Sheriff should be paid by salary instead of by fees. In that opinion I entirely concurred so far as principle is concerned, and consequently after discussion of the principle of the legislation required, I laid a draft Bill on the Table, which had been prepared by the Attorney General

Mr Pauncefote's report, which I enclose, explains what took place at the introduction of the

measure, and the careful investigation

of the details of the Bill by a

Special Committee of the Legislative Council.

I have only to add that, by

Executive Council,

the advice of which

I have for the present, subject to Your Lordship's approval, fixed the Salary of the Sheriff (Mr Wodehouse) at £100 per

annum.

I have the honor to be,

My Lord, Your Lordship's most obedient

humble servant,

Governor
