Sir John Jordan, interviewed on his return from attending the meet- ings of the League of Nations Opium Commission at Geners, said the chief subject discussed was the advisability of a boycot: es opium produced in Persia and Turkey if they still refused to conform to the Hague Opium Convention. Grest diversity of opinion was ex- pressed. Some thought that such action would only result in an increase in the production of opium in India and extensive smuggling from Turkey and Persia. The representative of India suggested that opium should be sold at a fixed price to prevent a great rise, which would make smuggling a profitable matter. Finally, the question was post- pened. but Turkey subsequently intimated her intention of entering the League, which will involve signing the Convention, while Persia also intimated intention to withdraw reservations she had hitherto

There was really no evidence of reduction since the Hague Convention, although there had been real improve- ment After referring to the very bad marked recrudescence of opium production in China, Sir John Jordan expressed disappointment that although the British, American and Chitese delegates strongly "pressed holding at least one public meeting of the Commission the pro-
