The principal centre was the Canotaph, where long before the appointed hour, the whole of Whitehall was a mass of people, many carrying wreaths. Military Bands, playing appropriate music, were constantly arriving and taking up their positions round the Cenotaph. Whitehall was lined with troops, a detachment of Guards faced parties of Sailars, Marines and men of the Air Force.

The principal ceremony in connection with the abservance of Armistice Day was the unveiling of a Monument at Rothondes, in the Forest of Compiegne, on the spot where the Armistice was signed Earl Haig and Lord Wester Wemyss awaited the arrival. by special train, of President Millerand, M, Poincare, members of the Cabinet and leading political and military dignitaries and Ambas- sadors. There were also present representatives of patriotic organisations. President Millerand during the proceedings pre- sented Lord Wester-Wemyss with the Medame Militaire. He declared how as first Sea Lord he had signed the Armistice there. He warm→ by saluted in person Lord Wemyss and the Allied forces, which had hastened from all parts of the world in the war.
A dramatic recital of war events was delivered by M. Poincare, who followed, in the course of which he specified by name every nation, including the British Dominions, which had risen against the acts of the Central Empires.

There were impressive scenes at the Armistice Anniversary. The principal ceremony was the burial of an unknown soldier at the foot of the National Independence Monument. The body was chosen at Bruges by a blinded ex-service man, out of five coffins from the military cemeteries at Liege, Samur, Antwerp and the Yer. It was brought to the Capital, where, on a gun-carriage and wrapped

Armistice Day was observed in the United States by simple Ceremonies. President Harding and members of the Cabinet. escorted by cavalry, made a pilgrimage to Arlington Cemetery and laid a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A ope-minute silence was observed in many parts of the country.
The President issued a message to the Nation, declaring that the day marked America's most impressive, participation in the world's affairs. He added: "I think we have come to realise we cannot hope to avaid obligations and responsibilities, often arduous and burdensome, as part of the price we must pay for our fortunate relationship to the confraternity of antions5."
DASTARDLY ATTEMPT AT MURDER.
London, Nov. 11.
A startling official statement has been issued by the Scotland it has been definitely Yard authorities.
