RUBBER SHAREHOLDERS' ASSOCIATION.

London, Nov. 8."

In a speech at the Annual Meeting of the Bubber Shareholders' Association to-day. Mr. Zorn, the Chairman, welcomed the restric- tive measures as ensuring the stabilisation of prices. He declaresi. however, that the real goal was the increase of consumption. To this end, he said, the Association was planning extensive pro paganda. Mr. Zorn advocated that efforts should be made to induce the Colonist Government to hand over a proportion of the Export duty for research propaganda and the development of the industry generally.

Mr. Zorn painted out that a big demand for latex was likely not only in connection with the new process for paper-making, bat in various other directions. A chemist inventor and manufacturer was now experimenting in view of the commercial application of rubber latex Some of these experiments were promising to be as important as the new method of making paper, concluded the speaker.

THE AMERICAN ELECTIONS.

New York, Nov. 8.

Mr. Miller, the Repablican Governor of New York, admits defeat by the Democrat, Mr. Smith. According to early reports from Chicago, the Democrats are leading the Republicans by two to one in districts at present held by Republicans.

Hitherto the Republicans have not gained a single seat at the expense of the Democrats in the House of Representatives: whilst the Democrats have won twenty-eight, but a gain of nearly eighty necessary to upset Republican control of the Senate. The returns show one Democrat gain, which is offset by the potable defeat of Senator. Hitchcock of Nebraska.

Mr. Frederick Kent Copeland, Democrat, has been elected Senator for New York State. He defeated the Republican, can-

didate Senator William M. Calder:

All the women candidates in the various constituencies have been defeated. Mr. Smith's majority in New York was over 400,000. So far this is the most spectacular feature of the elections.
