One of the few remaining correspondents in Smyrna talegraphs that, except for the squalid Turkish quarter, Smyrna has ceased to exist. The premises destroyed include Kemal Pasha's headquarters, the British and French Consulates and many fine buldings; compos. Ing the foreign quarter, while among the massacred is Monseigneur Chrystosomos, Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Smyrna, who is a well-known visitor to Britain. It is estimated in London that nearly £50,000,000 worth of British money was sunk in the Smyrna district.
!་་' The British colony numbers 2,500.
One hundred thousand tons of dried fruit, ready.for exportation, was consumed in the flames. Incidentally this will cause a short- age of raisins for Christmas puddings..
Estimates of the damage at Smyrna widely vary, An American correspondent on the spot figures it out at £40,000,000, but other quarters generally agree in the neighbourhood of the still enormeġi sura of £12,000,000 to £1,000,000. Lloyds will have 1 mest large. sums. for insurance. The latest rates against war risks were five? per cent,, confined to British and American ownerships, while Greek was rated at fifteen per cent. for shert period.
Only three Consulates are Intact In Smyrna-the Belgian, Spanish and Norwegian.
Paris, Sept. 16.
It is reported from Adana that Turkish authorities at-Smyrne have arrested a number of Greeks and Armenians who are alleged to have confessed to setting fire to the town.
London, Sept. 16.
་
A most painful impression, mingled with a feeling of deep indignation, has been caused by the news from Smyrna. While it is acknowledged that the Turks have been strongly provoked by the -burning and pillaging indulged in by the Greek Army during the retreat, it is pointed out that the victors are in possession of Smyrna and have constituted themselves guardians... The present massacre and incendiarism therefore put them in an even worse light,An- other aspect is that the happenings are bad for Turkish policy. The latest outrages against civilisation, which have alienated sympathy for them in the eyes of the Allies, have given strength to the argument that the Turk is unfit to govern anyone but himself.

It is announced that Britain is strongly reinforcing the troups in Constantinople and is asking Rumania, Jugo-Slavia and Greece to participate in the defence of the ncutral zones. She has invited the Dominions 13 sead contingents to defend interests for which they have already made enormous sacrifices and soil hailowed by immortal memories of the Anzacs, Orders have also been given to the British Fleet in the Mediterranean to oppore the infraction of neutral zones or any attempt to cross to the European' shore by the Turks, -

Britala is prepared to make great exertions to defend the freedom of the Straits and is gratified that these views are shared by France and Italy. The question of Constantinople is somewhat different. The Allied Conference in London in January, 1921, announced the intention of restoring Constantinople to the Turks, subject to a satisfactory adjustment of other matters.
Britain desires a Conference in the specdiest time to secure a stable peace with Turkey, but the Conference is impossible while there is any question, of, Kemalists attacking neutral zres. The Commissious in Constantinople have been instructed to notify Kemal that these zanes must le respected, but it is futile and dangerous to trust to diplomatic action alone in view of the excltel mood and extravagant claims of the Kemalists:
