Shippers get far more expeditions handling of cotton. tonnage by rail to Seattle and then by boat to the Orient and placing Seattle on a parity, with Galveston means loss of this tonnage to the gulf port. If the request of Galveston had been granted it would have been
practically impossible for the railroads to maintain an adjustment of rates under which.cotton.could-be-ex-- ported through Pacific ports.
THE US. LUMBER TRADE. Forthe first time in the history of the American lumber indus ry the export trade of the Pacific North- west exceeded similar business of the Southern pine region, during the first six months of the current year. In that period Washington, Oregon and British Columbia shipped 624 367,409 feet of lumber overseas * against 315,192,637 feet for the Southern pine region, the fir moy-ment having been 93 per cent. greater than pitch pine PXport. Export and domestic cargo shipments of lumber from the Pacific Northwest, the first half of 1922, totalled 1,598,758,150 feet 25 compared with 735) 159,035 feet for the same period in 1921, an increase of 116' per cent. Of all the overseas, pur- chases of Pacific Northwest lumber Japan aboma largest in- crease, with gain of 319 per cent. for the first half this year com- pared with first half 1921. Total of Japanese purchases to July 1 was 331,019,667 feet.
