SILVER MINING IS MEXICO. Senor J. J. Sanchez, acting Consul for Mexico, writes us: The total amount of silver pro- daced by Mexico from the year 1921 up to December of last year, #ggregates the considerable amount of 141,400,000 kilograms, fin round numbers. (nearly 377,-
$19.00 troy pounds), which repres- jente a value of some three thou- sand million dollars, if we cal- culate the value of silver at a price of twenty American dollars pa: kilogram. In January, 1923. for example, the silverproduction in Mexico was about 430,00 pounds. Therefore the, annual average production is twenty million American dollars, and although
these figures are by themselves varg notable, it cannot be said [that they represent the coal pro-
duction during the presant yeagu because if we take the average in value of the production in the last twenty years, the value reaches thirty five million. Amer- fican dollars per annum. Of tha total of seventy-five thousand mining claims there appear in the official records as being in force, that is to say, paying the proper mining tax, some twenty-eight thousand, and of these only three thousand eight buadred are being expinited, and they are the only ones that give the total of the silver producion in Mexico, and which represents the forty per cent. of such production, which has placed Mexico as the first silver-producing country in the world.
