The Value of Speed
In the following interview with Mr. Mallory, giren to a preras man in London, the lady cham- pion lawn tennis player of the Baited States, the only woman. ever to have beaten Mile. Susanne Lenglen since she becamie world- Famous, offers some excellent | advice.
"The most striking difference between women's 'play in Europe and America is speed.
"When I have said that before girls have thought I was oritiels ing their ability to run. America the gul's tennis is fant as compared to England and the Continent; and by that I mean speed of stroke.

***Over bare most women favour the underhand drive. That mezus they let the ball fall towards the second hop before striking. In America the first-clusa women iconcentrate upon hitting the ball much sooner; as the ball bounds they rush in on top of it and hit the moment they are in position.
"That is what I mean by fast tanail-for your opponent then has the least possible time to recover from her own shot and to get back into position,

·HIT FROM THE SHOULDER.
To do this the player must learn to hit from the shoulder. This modern stroke implies what is practically a horizontal swing: of the racket. The elbow and the wrist play only a minor part; it is the shoulder action which counts, together with the throwing of ore's whole weight into the for- ward punch.
"Other things being equal, the girl who employs this shoulder drive and hits the ball as quickly as possible after the hop should

PROHIBITION PROBLEMS.
Washington, July 27.
In connection with the attempt of the Treasury Department's "Prohibition Navy" to extend ita jurisdiction beyond American territorial waters, it is learned at the State Department that no such right of search is claimed as defensible, under existing international law in the note sent to the British Government; but it was intimated that if the British authorities are willing to enter a special agreement to permit search of British vessels for liquor on the bigh seas it will be highly agreeable to the officials here. But the more immediate concern is the question of stopping the alleged practice of issuing fraudulent clearance papers to ships designing to land liquor in America,
