Doctor Mat Rindler, dentist, formerly an Austrian but Dow a Czech, has been arrested by the French police and charged with having obtained money in the French Concession from Chinese, the latter baliasing that they were purchasing an opium concession in" Frenettown. Dr. Kindler is also charged with gun running..

Mr. Takamine discovered the diastatic enzynia known as Taka- diastase. He was born in 1854, and was educated at the Imperial University of Japan as a chemical engineer. Later.be studied inļi Glasgow lo 1881-84 · he Was Head Chemist of the Department of Agriculture and Commerce. SERIOUS OUTLOOK IN AMERICA.

Heatless days, a duhing the war, are being seriously discussed to palliate the cral shortage, the effects of which, it is gloomily anticipated, will result in a fuel famine text winter, since it is improbable that the depletion of stocks can be made up even if work at the mines could be resumed immediately.

The Cabinet has met and lengthily discussed the position result- ing from the failure of the Conference between the Senate Com- mittee and the Railway Executives. It is stated that the President regards the situation as serions, but not hopeless, and not at present sufficiently threatening to require the use of Federal troops anywhere.

Labour President Gampers has appealed to the Government to initiate direct negotiations, asserting Labour's good faith and declaring that, unless the employers are not absolute autocrats, the strikes can be quickly adjusted.

Meantime, the Government has apprinted a Special Commission. coal presided over by Mr. Hoover, to secure the distribution of necessary to maintain the operation of the railways.

The Chairman of the United States Shipping Board announces that thirteen additional ships with an aggregate tonnage of 90.000 have been chartered to bring coal from Europe. Orders for 500.000 tons of cool have been placed in England and Wales.

The Argentine President, Senor Alvear, has concluded a visit. to London, where he was ceremoniously received by the Prince of Wales, who welcomed him on his arrival and drove with him through the streets escorted by the Guards.
