IMPORTANT NOTICE TO HONGKONG RESIDENTS

EX-PRESIDENT WILSON IN RIFT.

Misunderstanding with Mr. Tumalty.

Not since Woodrow Wilson dropped Robert Lansing over- board early in 1920 has Washing- ton had so absorbing a marsel of gossip as the “disavowal” of Joseph P. Tumulty by the former President, writes Mr. F. W. Wile, she special correspondent of the Philadelphia Public Ledger,

Mr. Wilson's somewhat curt denial that be entrusted his long- time secretary and political confidante with message to the Jefferson Day dinner

of the National Democratic Club in New York on the evening of April 8, fell on the capital like a bombshell. The sensation WES not minimized by Mr. Tumulty's Įsimultaneous admission of the ** misunderstanding" which be gays be "regrets has arisen

between us.

The impression forced itself pon Wasbington that the Damon and Pythias relationship between Mr. Wilsoa and Mr. Tumulty. like so many other one-time intimacies maintained by the stricken statesman, has come to an' end.

The Public Ledger correspon- dent learns in an authoritative quarter that there is an inrlinstido in, bath the Wilson and the Tu- multy camps to regard a deplor able incident as closet. No further statements, it is declared. will be issued by either party.

BREAK HELD UNINTENTIONAL.

The idolatroos reverence Tu. multy renders Woodrow Wil-os makes it inconceivable, the form- er's friends assert, that he could wittingly do anything designed to hurt bis old chief. An explanation, which the writer has reason to be- tieve is weil founded, places a bith- erto unrevealed aspect upon the New York dinner episode. That Mr. Wilson did confer with Mr. Tumalty on the eve of the latter's departure for New York is UD- doubted. That the subject of a "message," or a "greeting." or a 'bail of some kind to the Democratic faithful B the national club's. festive board the following evening was lodged with Mr. Tumalty is equally un questionable.

The point of the situation that has suddenly blown up is just
