CRUISERS FOR MERCHANT-MEN,
Commenting upon the fact that the British Orreroment contem- plates the conversion of disment)- ed cruisers into cargo boats and recalling that Mr. Lasker, DINS- ident of the U.S. Shipping Board declared on April 5th. before the Senate Committee for Commerce that the United States could only agree to the 5-5-3 daval arma- ment sebəmə soncarning Great | Britain, Japan, and herself if she bad a powerful feet of merchant- men capable en ocasion of be. coming auxiliary curisers, the Journal du Havre says: "If Mr. Leaker's proposal is accept- ed, one may well ask what will remain of the Narai past. dies 1-in. io, and 4-ia, nd No. 3 deals with studs Pin. and 1-in, and 2in. for boiler stays. Like most striking inventions it is exceedingly imole in its operation. The an gineer who has to extract a broken -in. stud, takes the mediam- *ized box and unscrews the top part, which is furnished with & left-banded thread. He then-in- serte the 8-in. die, which, being conical, fits the cone inside of the bottom half of the box, which is fitted with three feathers to pre- vent the die turning. Next, he replaces the top portion of the Dox. leaving it slack on
the thread until the stad bas entered the box, when by the application of an ordinary standard spander to the lower hexagon the die will cat its own thread dowe to the root of the stud, when the box will come face to face with the part from which the stud bas to be extracted. All that 'then re- mains to be done is for the engineer to apply the spanner to the top hexagon, which, being a teft-handed thread, puts such compression on the die in the cone that the stud must come but, When the whole or broken ind is extracted removal from she tool equally simple. The stud bor is placed in a vice and the spanner applied to the Top, hexagon and turned to the left. when release in immediatały effected. Then a ameru blow on- the studio!eases the die and the operator can unscrew the stud with his fingers. The in vention has been patented in Great Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Belgium, Germany, the United States, Japan and Italy,
