PORTUGAL TO SPEND £3,000,000 ON ENGLISH GOODS,,
A credit of £3,000,000 has been granted to Portugal through the Export Credits Department for the purchase of British goods in this country. It is to be repay- aħle “within five years. This credit, it is anticipated, will en- able Portugal to put her exchange on botter basis and help to economic rectify her pressni Isituation.
JAPAN-MEXICAN OIL TO. The Japan-Mexican Oil Com- pany has been established by Mr. Matsukasa Goro, The new con- cero expects to import kerosens oil to the annual amount of two million koku for which an agreement has been made with the Mexican. International Oil Co. The oil will be refined and supplied to the Government and Korea and Manchuria, from a new factory at Chinghai Bay.
TIMBER FOR THE FAR EAST.
Increased activity in the lumber market is reported from Bellingham, U. 5. A. where the E. K. Wood Lumber Co... bas received inquiries from Japan for 11.100,000 feet of lumber. Ship- ments from that quarter to the Orient since January 1, have totalled 5,000,000 fast to Japan and 500.000 feet to China. The E K. Wood Lumber Company is about to load a vessel with 600.000 feet for Japan, and at the same time, 1,000,000 feet for China, most of which will come the Bloedel Donovan from Lumber mills.
SALTPETRE CONTRACTS. Contracts for the import of Chili saltpetre to Japan have been arranged to the amount of 21,000 tons during the first half of this year, particulars being as follow-Ginyo-maru: 9,000 tons. Anyomaru. 5.000 tons. Seiyo- maru 3,000 tons. Rakno-maru 3,000 tons. Of the 21.000 tons, 14500 tons are to be landed at Osaka and Kobe. The Gioyo- and Ango-marn bave already arrived, the Seiyo-maru is due by the end of this month, and the Rakuyo-maru is expected during June. The demand is estimated at 33,000 tons, that is, 15,000 tons as fertiliser and 18,000 tons for industrial use both in the wasto and Kwansai, and thas the supply comes short of the
maru,
demand by 12,000 tons. Bayers offered 135 for June shipment with no result, but bargains were concluded for July and September arrival at Y123. Moreover, the supply of home saltpetre will cease from June to September. Bach being the case as upward tendency will develop unless there arise some unexpect- ed factors to disturb it
