A Peking message reports that the eight places of. Changtion,

BIG HOME CARGO. The beaviest inward cargo yat carried by any of the five Ship- ping Board's **535" linars operat ed in the trans-Pacific trade out of Puget Sound by the Pacific Steamship Co, was brought by the steamship Pins Tree State on her second round trip. Her cargo consisted of 5,500 tons of general freight, including 2,000 balss of hemp from Manila and silk ship- menta. The Pine Tree State carried 168 passengers. LABOUR RECRUITINO IN MALAYA.

Couatry only,

men

At the annual meeting of the Johore Planters' Association on the 4th. instant, the Hon. Mr. C. Broadberry, who presided, said - The position of recruiting in Indis after, this year, or perhaps it would be better if Isaid after the new enactment of India is in force, will be extremely bad and from what I bave been able to bear will practically receive its This is not the death blow. opinion of

in this bat of men in India who Are well AC- quainted with what the position will be and as the question is of vital interest IO the whole of the Peniosals, it mdat receive the attention it demande not only from planters but also from the Government. The very doubtful position of the future of Tamil labour makes the question of Chinese labour much more vivid and it is to be hoped the Chinese Labour Board (which the Hoo. Dato Gawler has been trying for the last two years to force forward) will be able to arrange a schema of recruiting to suit all. The question of labour is of such unbounded interest to the whole Country that should the planters and miners be unable to come to any agreement the Gov- er ment of F.M.S. should send the matter to arbitration sad not let the disagreement of two por- tions of the community endanger the interests of the whole. I am afraid I have no more information than what was published in the Press on the new scheme of the Planters Association of Malays, but whatever scheme is eventually passed the P.A.M. in the meantime are continuing, and I will continue, to investigate the

labour question.
