The French Government's re- fuss to allow certain German steamers to call at French parts and the reprisals in Germany in consequence have been the sub- ject of comment. The situation has been further strained by the fact that the big liner Cap Polonio, of the Hamburg-South American Line was obliged to leave out Boulogne on bør first

America. trip to South

The German company has now ar- ranged that on that vessel's arriv al at Lisbon on the homeward journey such passengers as desire it may travel to Paris in one or other of two express trains which will save Lisbon ou the day of the vessel's arrival. The steamer will also make a special call st Rotterdam. It is not known whether any calls will be made at British ports.

Some time ago the Swedish steamer Vollrath Tham, 5,846 tons, belonging to the Trafikaktie- bolaget Grangesberg-Ozelosund, weat aground on the Norwegian coast and sustained severe dam- age to her bottom. care of cranka, crossheads, pistons and bearings in the best of reci- procating engines. It is of inter- est. therefore, to note that the propelling machinery of the Lutetia (15,000 tons), one of the finest vessels in the fleet of the French Compagnie Sud

of Atlantique, consists

the Rochambeau system of

cam- bined turbine and reciprocating engines. The steam is taken first through the latter engines, whence it passes directly into & low-pressure turbine separate abaft, driving a finer pitched screw than that operating by the reciprocating machinery. There are two sets of these engines, developing a total horse- power of 2,400, and capable of giving the vessel a speed of 1854 knots. There are 18 cylindrical boilers, each fitted with three farmsces, and with Howden's forced draught; and the coal consumption is about 250 tons per 24 hours. There were two TOTY strong reasons why the Lutetie was not adapted for the burning of oil fuel, the first being that sho Iwas built at St. Nazaire in 1913, before this system had attained its present popularity, sad the cost of converting the boilers and bunker space was, after the war. found to be too formidable an obstacle. The second resson wEE the fact that supplian of liquid fuel are not very readily procar- abla on the South American route.
