WANT STINNES.
The nature of the Stinnes me- chinations may be best ander stood from the scheme alluded to in the British Parliamant a few weeks ago. This great German. industrial magnate, it was stated, had offered the Dutch East Indian Government a loan of £10,000- 000 at 6 per cent on condition that the Dutch authorities placed their 1982 contracts` with hĩa combine. The proposal was dis tinctly characteristio not only of Stinces methods to-day, but of pre-war German commercial sfrategy; but we learn that the present Dutch East Indian Government will have nothing to do with it, and has even can- [celled, so far as lies in its power, the contracts made with, the ¡Stinnas combine ia 1920.- ; Shipping and Engineering.
ANTI-RAS VARNISH. Within the last few years the damage to property by rats and the dangers of disease carried by them have been folly realized, with the result that the ex- termination of these pests bas developed into quite a science. The latest method of dealing with them is by the use of "Batsticker," a varnish which is spread on sheets of cardboard or wood and baited with cheese, and the rats, in attempting to reach the bait, find their feet bald fast by the varnish. When they try to bite themselves free, their mouths become similarly stuck and they die of suffocation in a very short [time. One great advantage which a killers is that it is non- this preparation has over other.

The Bethlehem Shipbuilding. Corporation has purchased the South-Western Shipbuilding Company's yard at Los Angeles Harbour, Southern Califormis, } and has increased its facilities by the addition of a new dry dock capable of accommodating vessels up to 12,000 tons. A number of other important changes hava also been made, or are projected for the near future, including the installation of a large number of the latest type of machines in the shope, new electrical equipment and several additional buildings. Signs are not lacking shat the importance of Los Angeles in the American seaborne trade to the Far East is rapidly increasing, and severst vew shipping lines have already been started there, with the prospect of more to follow, so that the Bethlehem Corporation is anticipating plenty of constructional and repair work, It is also intended to manufac ture steel for building purposes.
