AUSTRALIAN TRADE WITH GERMANY.
The first direos indication of A | the re-opening of trade with Ger- many, which is fixed for August, |is the appointment of Australian
· agents by a German cargo line. The company asks that, að far as may be practicable, returned soldiers be employed on work connected with its service. The Conference of Associated Cham- ber of Commerce at Hobart has been discussing a suggestion from Brisbane that trade should not start until January 1, 1923, to enable marchants to clear their stocks. The Prime Ministar thinks that August will be late enough. The policy of Government has been hostile to restoring trade re- Istions, but as other nations bave rasumed these, Australia most, The says, face the facts. The anti- „dumping laws, combined with the supervision exercisable by the Tariff Board, should be guarantees ngaïnat imports to the detriment of Australian industry. These safeguards would act to a great extent as a probibition. Ger- Imany had already purchased from £3,000,000 to £4,000,000 worth of coarse wools. There was no boyer of wools of that type com- parable to Germany. and obvious- |ly Germany would be unable to pay unless Australia opened its Irmarkets ja return. It will stilH be open to Parliament, which should meet in June, to reverse the Government's action.

TIX RESTRICTION SCHEME. At the close of a leading articla the Maloy Mail says: There is always failure to como ask contingency-the failure of the scheme to raise the price of tic. It has not been shirked or over- looked by those responsible for the pamphlet since they submit that in this event the Government would retain their stocks and by the reduction of ten years' sup-- plies by 15.000 tons would at all events be in a sounder position than they can anticipate being under normal output conditions." This is insufficiently demonstrat- eď. Other paragraphs in the pamphlet are unconvincing, On the whole, we do got think the scheme is as sensational as its heading would appear to imply. But, in spite of the surplus in tin bring here and therefore controll- jable. the scheme seems too de- pendent upon universal trade re- vical, which, as previously stated. many pat Bolivis on firmer ground, and restart tin operation in Cen- tral Europe, which might render the position worse than before.
