The total amount of goods-imported from South China last year amounted to $50,000,000.

In 1921 the banking business in Hochow was prosperous. The. Bank of Chios, the Hwa Fu Bank, the Chn Fong Bank and the native banks gained large profits. TO COMPETE IN EUROPEAN MARKET.
The announcement that the Ming Sing Umbrells Manufactur- ing Company of Hangcbow, lo- tends to increase its capital by another $:9,000, calls attention to the development of the local in- dustry. The demand from Japan and the provinces has grown far beyond the capacity of the com- pany. At present there are 59 workman, who turn out 20 am- brellas daily. With the addition to its capital, the firm will under- take the manufactors of two new types of silk umbrellas. Already it has four kinds on the market. The company hopes soon to com- pate in the European market.
CHINESE EASTERN RAILWAY. With referenca to the alleged·· Essertion on the part of the Powers that the Chinese Eastern Railway should of necessity be put under international control, Chang Tao-* lin is reported to have stated to the effect that inasmuch as the operation and protection of the Railway in question are being carried out smoothly and com- plately, coupled with the fact the Chinese Government has invested sum of $3,000.000 in the line. the Powers would do well only to point out imperfect paints, if there are ang. It is also reported that Chang Tso-lin bas expressed his views, absolutely opposing the proposed international control of the Chinese Eastern Railway, declaring that there is no neces- sity whatever of Railway being I controlled by the Powers.
