Early in his career he came to Hongkong and, apart from his routine medical work, wen fame as a parasitologist. Among his greatest sima in thi Colony was the purification of the milk supply, then entirely in th hands of the Chinese. Dr. Janson, as he then was had difficulties to overcome, which are detailed in the interesting record of the Company's progress which was recently published in book- form. Besides, Dr. Manson was the first, on the strength of in-. vestigations Legun in Hongkong, to enunciate the hypothesis. (since proved correct by Major Ross) that the mosquito is the host of the malarial parasite at one stage of its existence and thus an active agent in diffusing the disease. After leaving Hongkong Dr. Manson became Physician and Medical Adviser to the Colonial Office and through his critical hands passed for many years the young men who have entered the service of the Government here. He created a Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1900, a K C.M.G. nine years later and a G.CM.G. in 1912. Besides bis degrees won in Aberdeen and London he was an Hen. B. It is reported that the dotation is impending in Amsterdam of a Chinese loan of the value approximately of £1,500,000, at eight per cent, to be issued in Chinese Exchequer Bonds of a thousand guilders each, at cine-sixty. The issue will have a lien upon the Lung Talaguhal railway. Redemption is at par, by te annul drawings beginning in 1926. THE GENOA CONFERENCE.
the
Landon, April 10. There is manifest chariness on the part of the Press to vance any but tourless views bearing on the Genoa Conference or to engage in optimistic expectations pending a closer acquain- tance with the programme to be actually submitted to the congress, It is conceded. however, despite the absence of America and despite restrictions imposed by France, the Conference is in many respects the most interesting yet held in view of the fact that Russion and German delegates will face the Allied and neutral reprezentatives for the first time. The nationals of 24 States will sit round the Conference table.
