Xtional matters of the present day are important and heavy, and very soon there will be nobody to accept responsibility for them if nothing is done. The Great Pres- ident feels the heavy respon- 1sitility placed on his shoulder- and now desires to have a rest, He wall not act contrary the law and remain in office any longer. Many troubles have arisen in the past and the Great President is very sad as a result thereof. The position of the country among the other nations, we are afraid, is shaking. and the situation is very danger

We dare not think of these Q113. questions any more.

Every time we think of them we tremble.

The Great President hopes that a successor will be elected in accordance with the laws and maintain the situation so that the position of the country will not be a shaky one and in order that progress may be made in thr future. This is our big hope over and over again.

THE U. S. SENATE AND THE TREATIES.

Washington, March 23.

news-

Senator Borup does not appear to have helped the cause of trengthened the opposition to Treaty by the uggestion of a secret Anglo-American alliance. Regardless of party the press universally condemns Senator B:rab, who, however, it credited with the intention. before a vote is taken, of moving that the charges be investigated by the Foreign Relations Committee. The papers predict that this will produce an interesting position, be- cause the Republicans will undoubtedly opp:se the motion, thus determining the few Democrats who are sitting on the fence to vote against the Treaty as long as the slightest doubt exists respect- ing the secret alliance, if this course is also taken by the three among the presen: halfhearted pro-Treaty Democrats, the Treaty would most probably be defeated; but little time exists for pro- paganda to this end, owing to the propinquity of the conclusion

of the debate.

A Display of Oratorical Fireworks.

Washington, March 21.

The Senate last evening concluded the debate on the Pacific Treats and prepared for the finsi vote to-day. With the leaders on both sides privately agreeing, ratification by a narrow margin seemed certain. A display of oratorical fireworks, scarcely sur- passed even at Versailles, brought the debate to an end. The ratification majority is estimated at from three te len, depending on how many seanters join the majority once they see the Adminis tration leaders are sure of the necessary two-thirds.

A COMING EXPEDITION.

London, March 24. Professor John Walter Gregory (Professor of dialogy at the University of Glasgow), is shorty setting out oa nis expedition 1. south-westhern China. He has explained in the Daily Chromele that apart from the collection of zoological anu botanicas material, with the object of throwing light oa tae climatic change which con- rutted tae migrations of animai and plant life, he desires especially to seek the solution of the conflicting theories regarding the rela tons of the Himalayan and Indo-Malayan Fountain systems,

sly that the Himalayan line costinaes across Soub-western Caina North-eastern Asia, and secondly that the eastward continuation of the Himalayas is blocked by the solid mountain mass of South-western China and is detected through Western Burma and Sumatra, thence eastward along the southern margin of the castern Arch.pelago.

AMERICAN SOLDIERS TO GET BONUS.

Washington, March 24.

The House of Representatives has passed by an werwhelming majority the amended Bill providing a bonus for solders who par- tipated in the War, involving an expenditure of about four milliards of dollars. The fate of the Bill in the Senate is uncertain.
