FRÉGÉT AND PAÍSENGER STEAMERS,

The question of changing the present fourteen Japanese grades of raw silk for fifteen graden still bangs fire. When the meatier was debated at a general meeting of the Central Silk Yarn Society called in the middle of last month it was arranged to adopt fifteen grades as a standard, in vlaw of [the fact that even the present fourteen grades were not strictly observed, and that it was thought more convenient to take up fifteen grades in the course of resling. The meeting then ¡decided to propose the mattar to a Japanese-American Silk Con- ference to be convened in or about April. It appears, how- ever, that at a Confarance of the New York Silk Trade Associa- tion on the' 5th. instant the proposed alteration of grades was doomed to be rejected there being fifty-five in favour and savonty- HONGKONG TO SAN FRANCISCO

cannot be said, however, that the Japanese advocates of the altara- tion of grades have failed in their attempt altogether. After all, it may justly be said that America bas taken up a year's delay for studies, instead of being absolute- ly opposed to the alteration.
