THE COTTON INDUSTRY. It is still less than two mont states a Koba papar, since the restriation of work in the mana factura of cotton yarn abrogated, and a section of the cotton interests in already agitati ing for the resumption of the restriction. Some of the largy mills are in favour of restriction and if the cotton yarn and cloth merchants are of the 'aamə mind short time may be resumed But they are afraid of public opinion. Among the large mills the Kanegafucbi, Dai Nippon Toyo, and other milis are already avidently substantially reducing ouspur, since they act strictly upon the system of four holidayrı a mouth and, ten work hours i day. In the case of the Dai Nippoc mill, January's output „decreased by as much as 16 per cent, below the previous month, though the special holidays of the same mooth must not be left out of calculation. The output of al the mills participating in the Spinning Association has de creased by 9.6451 bales. Whit results are thus obtained similar to the maintenance of the curtail- ment of output, a formal sugges tion will probably not be made Dealers also are not insisting on curtailment, as they did before They have no very long forwaN contracts, and they too are fr fear of public opinion. But a both the mills and merchants desire at heart that output be curtailed again, the matter maj assume a palpable form' at ́nd distant date.

JAPANESE COAL The domestic coal trade ha been better since the end of le year, as the present is the season of demand for fuel Of dust there is such an absence of sale: that the Collieries' Associatiɔi bas withdrawn some of the re straints hitherto placed upon pro duction.

But coal for expor finds its trade shut on every side for it is far dearer thao British (and American coal America

coal monopolises Manila, and even in Singapore and the South Sea, where Japanese coal bas long had things all its own way Bonia Care Astor, from Bam-British. Indis, and Australia bay.
