CHINESE NEWS.
A COOL THEFT.
Enterprise which Failed,
How to raise the wind in s 133 13 13 which required the minimum of physical effort on his part was the problem which Donfronted A needy Chinese, named So Tsun, yesterday. He was in I secluded atrast, when the sight of two com- patriots entering the public Intrine gave him the required opportunity. Putting on his most official air, So Tean fallowed them in, and, announcing that he was on a search for unlawful articles, ordered them to take off" their coats so as to facilitate thal task. He deftly went through the pockets, but the result was disappointing. The only alter- native left him was to lake the coats, and, selecting the better of the two. he calmly walked off with it. But the bus and cry that was raised by the dispossessed one, brought a constable on the scene, and, realising that his liberty was st stake, So Tsun retraced his foot- steps and offered to return the jacket to his victim. That did no: satisfy the latter; he had been tricked, and was not content until be saw So Tsun safely in charge of the lukong.
The offence admitted of two charges when So Tsun's conduct came to be examined by the Inspector. One was that of im- personating a police officer, and the other of stealing a jacket. With regard to the first Mr. J. R. Wood this morning decided that, there was not sufficient evidence, and acquitted the defendant oo this count. On the second charge bis Worship imposed sentence o four months' imprisonment with hard labour.

That he carried out blasting operations after the regulation ENGLISH MADE hour, was the charge brought in a summons against the contractor,
Lam Woo, before Mr. R. E. Lind-reach Gry sell this morning. The defence Dark Gre
!lubog Gre was that the scene of the blasting operations was taken up by the workmen of the Kowloon Docks during the day, and that the work had to be postponed until the afternoon, after the regulation bour. This was done in deference to the request of the Manager of the Docks and the building archi. tect
Inspector C. Aris, prosecuting, said that the defendant held a special licence, issued by the P.W.D., for work done outside of the regulation hour, but this was in respect of the area inside the Kowloon yards. Where the de- fendant carried out his blasting operations was outside of this area-and-therefore not covered by the special licence. The Or- dinance, the officer added, was very strict on the point.
A remand was ordered by the Magistrate to enable the police to enquire into further evidence.
