Senator Pearce Defends the - Commonwealth's Policy. Senator Fearos, Australia's delegate to Washington, has written to the New York Times controverting statements recently made by Frofessor Thwing, Emeritus, Professor of the Western Reserve University. [condemning the policy of White

Senator Pearce danies such statements as that the policy rep- resents a class Interpretation of the word "white," that the population does not ingresso la any worthy proportion, that settlers on the land soon return to the great cities, and that the cli- mate provenis white settlement, giving facts and figures for all his contradictions.
Senator Pearce claims that the Federal, and State Governments uro doing everything possible to encourage white immigration of the best class. He points out! that Australia muffers from the distance from Europe and the cost of transport.
He strongly objects to Professor Thwing's declaration that the policy represents permanent servitude of the white race. No such thing is possible in Aus- tralia, where no class of labour is recognised as menial, and in- stances are giren of men in sli walks who commenced at the bottom of the ladder socially and industrially.
