The day passed without news of further happenings in Ulster, munity from either in the way of raids or reprisals.

The Northern Government has taken most active measures of self-defence. Five thousand armed special constables are holding the frontier, while repair gaugs are busy restoring the telegraph at Belfast and Enniskillen, which the raiders cut last night.

This may explain the dearth of news. That the trouble is not finished appears from a message received during the evening that five special constables and four British soldiers were kidnapped in Monaghan to-day by the Irish Republican Army.

RETRENCHMENT COMMITTEE'S REPORT TO BE PUBLISHED.

Big "Cots" Expected în Combatant Services and

Education.

London, Ferbuary 9. The anxiously-awaited report of the Eric Geddes Retrenchment Committee is being published to-morrow.

These has been a fierce discussion in the Press over the Govern- ment's delay in publication, which is attributed to the the activities of the Cabinet's revising committees in whittling down certain re- commendations. It is believed that they have rejected £20,000,000. or one-fifth of the suggested savings.

The departments most prominently discussed are the fighting services and education. It is declared that the "cuts" recommended are respectively £48,000,000 and £18,000,000.

The Cabinet is reported to be divided on the subject of the cuts for the fighting services. The exact amounts of the savings accepted will not be known till the Estimates appear.
