CHINA AND THE CONFERENCE.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9. 1822.

Landen, Fak. S

The advantages accruing to China from the Washingtan Con- ference were enumarated by Lord Curzen in the course of his speech in the House of Lords. He pointed out that at a time when nobody can contend that China presents the spectacle of a strong govern ment or a united people, she has been admitted to the conference table on a par with the great world powers. In addition to the retrocession of Kinochow, Shantung and Wal-hai-wal, he believed Francs intended to restore Kwang-chow-wan. Chins would per naps not have got these and other advantages in half a century if the promisen of the old diplomacy were pursued. It only remains for her now that this great opportunity has been afforded her, to smmbrace the chance given to show she is worthy of a destiny com- parable with the great natural strength of her resources and the place numerically filled by her population in the eastern world.

Seconding the reply to the address Lord Crews thought that what had been done at Washington regarding sphères of induance in China was a result whereon we ought to congratulate ourselves and everybody concarned. Lord Curzan farmed the Naval Treaty concluded at Washington a great achievement and paid a tribute to President Harding and Mr. Hughes. Ho referred to the fins! disappearance of all fear of aggression in the Pacific.
