The general secretary of the National Union of Manufacturers states that the union has now entered into an arrangement with the Board of Inland Revenue, under which subscriptions, levies, donations, &c., paid by members and others, may be allowed. as a trade expense in computing their income-tax liability.

SALES OF CHINESE PURS, At the opening of the autuma fur sales in London Japanese and Chinese furs were submitted to a fairly good attendance of buyers. The was little demand for dog mats and robes or goatskina, bat dog skins and goat rugs met with

■ better reception, and a fair pro- ,portion was sold. Good prices w-re realised for Chins wolf and foxes. Part of the offering of Thibet lamb akins was with- drawn

GOOD ROADS IN AUSTRALIA.

The Victorian State Govern- ment will provide £500,000 in the [énsuing year's estimates for the use of the Country Roads Board. Large sums have been expended on road-making. The State of Victoria is improving rural con. ditions to marked extent through this form of establishing "feeders" to the, railroad system. The Board collects approximately £200,000 annually from motor fees and other taxes,

SIR CHARLES ADDIS AT

SHANGHAL

Sir Charles Addia who arrived in Shanghai on the 2nd ins, was entertained at lunch at the Shanghai Club by the Committee of the British Chamber of Com- merce. The distinguished visi tor's health was proposed by Mr. E. F. Mackay, Chairman of the Chamber, and in an exceedingly interesting reply Sir Charles dealt briefly with aspects of the big financial problems with which Europe is faced, with the chances jef commercial zevival and with *

administrative and educational problems in China, congratulat

the Associated Chambers upon the work which they are doing in the educational field.

AUSTRALIAN AEROPLANES. The first Commonwealth con- tract for the manufacture of aero- D'anes in Australia, using Austra Fan timbera, was ratified by the Air Council at Melbourne. The order is for six Avro machines, which will be constructed by the Australian Aircraft and Engineer- ing Company, Sydney. The work of inspecting and stamping the various parts of the machines will devolve on the arsenal branch of the Defence Department until the Air Force has grown to an extent which would warrant the establishment of an Aviation Inspection Department on simi- lar times to that in England. There will be no dificulty about securing the "right stuff" as pilots for the Australian Air Force. The young Australian takes to the air as keenly as be takes to all forms of sport. From the tale of Victoria alone 150 applications have been received for appointments to the Air Force, states the Commonwealth Trade Commissioner at Shanghai.
