COMMERCIAL NEWS,
PAPER IMPORTS, AN Last yean" Japan imported mainly from Britain, Amarica, and Germany, pape" totalling AS much as 19,265,000. The 20 per cant reduction of domestic output which the Paper Associn- tion has maintained, since the Iyear before. last effectively re- minded consumers that they can buy foreign paper, which is at once batter and cheaper. Exports for the year amounted to Y18,- 846,000, sa ¥6,581,000 remains as an excess of exports. There was fsome degree of activity in exports to China, India, and the South Sess, but exports to Europa prov. ed far from satisfactory. Fearing. that if the present condition lasts more paper will be imported than exparted this year, the Paper Association is about to hold a joint mesting in Tokyo in order to discuss the propriety of abolishing the current curtail- ment of output, the term of which expires at the end of February. While large mills, as already re- ported, desire to work at full pressure, small milla intend to bring forward proposals at the coming meeting for maintaining the cartailmant for six months more. It is expected, bowever, that a decision will be reached by A majority at the meeting to do away with the restriction of work and allow free work, from the beginning of March. DUTY ON FOREIGN
GLASSWARE.
Prices of British glassware to- day are rougbly double pre-war prices, whereas, in sterling, Ger- man goods are only half pre-war charges, said & witness before the Safeguarding of Industries Com- mittee. Mr. S. Jenkinson, manag. ing director of Webb's Crystal Glass Company, of Edinburgh. Tatbary. Stourbridge and Queen- boro, said that imported wine glasses (sherry or port) could be bought for Js. a dozen, whereas it would cost his firm 9s, a dozen to make them. Claret glasses, im- ported at 3s. d.. a dozen, would cost 11s. 94d. to make in Eng- land. The same thing occurred in half-pint tumblers, ordinary glasses. and lamp chimneys, while in some goods the differ- ence was greater. On the Con- timent it was not uncommon to and factories working on one special line and supply- ing the larger facturies. Gør- man workers were now busy while English people ware walk- ing about. In the beginning of 1921 his firm employed 723. workers; now they had only 411. Sir Thomas Allen asked the wit- neas how's 33 1-3 per cent. duty would help British manufac- turers, when the difference in price ranged from 250 to 7001 per cent. Witness said the duty would increase home produétion and sales, and bring down over- bead charges. The effect would be greater than the actual duty.
FREE BATHS FOR UNEMPLOYED.
Bethnal Green Conicil are to allow free use of the slipper baths on four days a week to 15 of the unemployed. Towels and soap. will also be provided gratis.
