COMMERCIAL NEWS,

NEW BRIDGE OVER THE WHANGPOO.

The Chinese Department of Public Works and the Tax Bureau propose to erect a steel bridge over the Whampoa River at Tung Kui Poo. The plans for the bridge have been made and work I will start as soon as the neces tuary funds are procured.

JAPAN'S STEEL PRODUCTION.

According to the latest investi- gations, Japan's output of steel for 1931 ia pus at 500,000 tons, of which the Yawats Ironworks has manufactured 300,000 toas and Csako Ironworks, Nippon. Steelworks Kawsashi Ship- building Yard and some other private works 200,000 tons,

CHINESE & RAILWAY.

It is understood that a mandate is to be issued shortly, appointing Dr. C. C. Wang as Associate Director of the Chinese Eastern Railway. This appointment hes be recommanded by the Director General of the Railway, Mr. Wang Nai-ping, in recogni- tion of the services rendered by Dr. Wang during the war.

CHINESE CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE

new

The Kiangsa Chambers of Commerce have written to the National Chambers asking that the Government be requested to aand copies of the commercial treaties with Mexico, Austria and the Far Eastern Republic to the various Chambers in accordance with the decision arrived at the recent conference held in Shanghai that all commercial treaties should be submitted to IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY IN THE V. I.

Up till quite recently, reports from the chief United Kingdom iron and steel

contrem were gloomy in the extreme. Prices were falling, demand was almost non-existent, production had been reduced to infinitesimal propor- tions; in numerous instances fur- paces, mills and whole establish- ments were standing idle, and a vast army of unemployed men was wearily waiting on work. The situation is not now so black. In some directions it is, indeed, slightly improved; and with the torn of the year there is stronger evidence of recovery.

RAILWAY RATES CONCESSIONS.

The concessions are totally inadequate, said Mr. Arthur Dorman, a Cleveland ironmaster, in an interview with the Press Association's Middlesbrough rap resentative, on the subject of railway rates reductions. There was not going to be any relief on delivery charges for pig-iron, and the saving per ton in transport charges. for steel billets would oly range from 1s 10d to 2s fd per too. Mr. J. Borton, another prominent Cleveland ironmaster, declared that the reductions did not appear likely to be of much real assistance to Cleveland iron trade. No relief was afforded in the rates on ironstone, and as it took 3 tons of Cleveland iron- stone to produce a tow of pig-iron that was a serious matter.
