The Oriental Colonisation Com- pany is extending its influence to the South Seas, saya tha Japan a Chronicle, With a permission of the Dutch Government, it has established an Esat Indies Col- onisation Company with a capital of Y3,000,000, while obtaining a lease of 12,000 square cho of land anderthe management of French- men in Borneo. In October of last year, it further bought the Nishimura Colonisation Company and transformed it into a South Seas Development Co. with a' capital of Y500,000. The chief objects of the company in the South Seas are the cultivation of rubber, coffee, and sweet potatoes. A LARGE JAPANESE ENTERPRISE. Thanks to Mr. Incar, Governor of the Bank of Japan, Mr. Yoki, Chief of the Osaka office of the bank, has accepted the post of Managing Director in the Yasuda Hozensba, the main office of the Yandas. During the past four years, Mr. Yuki has made him- self prominent in finance as well as in numerous enterprises start- ed since the war, and now carries considerable weight in Osaka financial circles as one of the three biggest financial magnates. with Mr. Koyams, President of the Sanjushi Bank, and Mr. Yukawa, Managing Director of the Sumitomo Bank. BRITISH TRADE IN THE FAR EAST
An article in the Times on Far Eastern trade, investigates the position of British trade in Japan and asserts that Great Britain furnished last year more than 10 per cent of Japan's imports A compared with one-sixth before the war. The article emphasizes that Germany before the war sup- plied 10 per cent. of Japan's total purchases abroad or 30 per cent. of Japan's purchases in Europe. An important Far Eastern adver- tising agent, discussing Lord Northcliffe's statement, pointed out the necessity for a decisive movement on the part of British traders in the Far East and ad vocated that a combination of the American printed publicity methods and the German system of having missionaries carry on commerce should be applied to British trade.
