People cannot under- stand why U. 8. seamen should require so many stewards to look after their bodily comfort: but the obrions answer to this seems to be that unless they were bribed in this fashion there would be very few U. and Mr.James§. Craig was elect- ed deputy chairman and o hair man of the Executive Committe. The Charman said there was a matter which was causing a good Ideal of trouble among shipowUSIE. Under the new schedule of rates it cost more for a 4,000__con steamer to be taken into Gree nock than it took to take it up to Glasgow, and Greenock ship- owners made a strong protest against that. It was stated that the matter was still under coa- sideration. Provost McMillan, Rothesay, drew the attention of the authority to the menace, to shipping in the Clyde by floating mines, and suggested that if they had any standing they should spproach the Amiralty on the subject. He understood that since July fire mines bad been sighted In the district.
