TRADE FATHIBITION IN JAPAN.

An international Peace Ex- hibition is to be held at Tokyo | naxt March and arrangements ́are now being made to establish a special pavilion for British ex- hibita There is at present in Japan a marked tendency to favour British goods, says a trade. correspondent. As regards the Erbibition itself, it is understood that all countries will be repres- eated and that large. exhibits aro expected from Amarica and Ger- many, bat Great Britain has secured the advantage of being the only foreign country to pos- sess a special pavilion for its ow exhibits. Realising the value of this Exhibition from the point of view of British trade, the Federa tion of British Industries is co- operating with a view to securing a collective display of goods rep- resentative of the great British industries.

THE CLAM-BRELL HÜCKET. The efficacy of the clam-sheli buckat has been well demon- strated in New York, where the s American arrived recently with the coal in her bankers very hot, the temperature of the coal being 180 degrees. Of course it was I necessary to take out the coal but

it was almost impossible for to work in the bunker, la he emergency the. Weeks Stovel- oring Co. was called in, and they discharged the bon coal with a crane and a clamabell bucket. The steamer arrived at the docks at 8 pm and 50 minutes Inter the first bucket of coal :- WAS hoisted. About 600 tons of cox! was discharged before the last of the hot coal was reached. In May, of last year the Buy Varu came into port with a full cargo of coal which was on fire in No.2 hold containing about 2,600 tons. The smoke and gas were so thick that it was impos sible for men to work in the hold. and it seemed necessary to pat the steamer on a flat somewhere and pump the hold full of water. The same firm was called on for assistance and in twelve hours bad dug down to the bottom of the hold, making it possible to reach the fire with lines of hone lowered from the deck and wa tinguish it. The smoke way so thick that it was impossible to sae down the batch, so a lead line was used to ascertain the depth to which the bucket bad dug
