In 1902 there were no less than 24 vessels asal of 100 years or more in age. Perhaps the joldest of these was the Italian barque Anita, built at Genos in 1548 and modelled on the Sants Maria of Columbus. She was broken up at Tenerife seventeen years ago. Another vessel that lived long was the Betsy Caius, lost off the Tyne in 1827. 1921, contains much interesting information relative to shipbuild- ing. The increasing demand for tankers is a striking feature of modern shipbuilding development. In July 1914 the gross 100- RAZO of this type

of YES- sel recorded in the Sociely** Register Book

was 1,478,983. In July of this year the total was 4,418,683 tons. During the past year, 353 vessels, representing 1,867,115 tons--or 33 per cent. of the total toonage of new ships classed-were fitted for oil barn- ing. Seven years ago the vas3+}5 burning oil fasl sgzugated 1,310,- 209 tons, a total which has now ipcressed to 12,795,615 tons. The industrial significance of this change is quite evident when we state the oil-burningsteamers NOW io commission would require 20,000,000 tong of Coll bankers, a quantity equivalent to over 8 per cent of the pres- ent annual output of the United Kingdom. Another festare which ia emphasized in the report is the increase in the number of ship's driven by internal combustion
