TRADE ASSOCIATIONS IN SHANGHAL

The international character of | Shanghai trade has resulted in the wracking of many sttempts to form associations of merchants for handling particular lines of goods. It is, therefore, of- Tome interest to ·learn" thai the Reinforcing Steel Associa- tion has been in successful operation since early this year. This association was formed among stockholders of reinforcing steel bars to control the liquida tion, of the stocks beld in | Shanghai. Owing to war delays in the execution af orders, many firms bad placed further indents in the hope of getting quicker, deliveries In the year 1920 both old and Daw orders were delivered together. Besides this, a number of newly- established firms had imported stocks of reinforcing bars in the belief that there was a profitable outlet in China. The result was that at the beginning of 1921 tbe Shanghai market WAS heavily overstocked, and was faced with the possibility of ent-throat competition. Meetings

called of {›boss interested ; and those meet- fings resulted in the formation of The Reinforcing Steel Association. The affairs of the association are controlled by a small, but strong. committee. The main feature of their policy is the decision to meet all competition, and not to make the purchaser pay

него

more for local stocks than be

Bew

would have 10 pay for importations. The association's price is, therefore, adjusted on the basis of the cheapest avail- able hars which can be imported. No attempt is made to force buyers to give excessiva prices evan for prompt de livery. and in this way the association bas been able to avoid any unfriendly feeling on the part of the buyer, the banks or the well known suppliers. A storage scheme is at the disposal of the members, and the association's godowns, which have very large capacity, are always well filled.
