THE FRANCO-KEMALIST AGREEMENT.
New York, Nov. 26.
Lord Curzon's speech on Thursday has almost eclipsed the basi- ness of the Conference at Washington. Though the delegates have refused to comment thereon, the newspapers criticise very candidly Anglo-French statesmen talking domestic polities when so many earn- est men are trying to talk world peace. Even the papers which condemn what they describe as France's policy of isolation depre- cate Lord Curzon's implied rebuke as adding fuel to Anglo-French wrangling; and they hope mediating induences will avert the mis- fortune of widening the gap in Anglo-French relations.
M. Briand took exception to Lord Curzon's speech implying that France had stolen a march on the Allies by concluding the Kemalist treaty. M. Briand contended it was not a treaty but an agreement for settlement of "her private affairs." The Italians had a similar Shanghai, Nov. 26. Canstic Press Comment
Paris, Nov. 26. Commenting on the announcement from London that the ques- tien is being discassed of sending a British ship to take off Bri- tishers who may be endangered by the French withdrawal from Cilicia in consequence of the Franco-Kemalist agreement, Figaro remarks that this is cet another Panther of Agadir, but neither is it a peaceful or friendly action.
Absurd Report Denied.
Though declaring that they refused to believe it, the Paris Matin has published a report that the British are concentrating troops at a view to a landing at Cilicia. This has evoked a Cyprus, with categoric denial from London, where authoritative circles fail to understand how the absurd report could have originated, unless in to leave the fact that the British Government signified its intention of send- ing a ship, if necessary, to bring of Britishers anxious Cilicia after the French evacuation.
Friendly British Note,
The British note with reference to the Franco-Kemalist agree- It ment has been received. It is couched in very friendly terms. expresses pleasure at France's assurance that the agreement does not imply recognition of Angora Government, either de jure or de facto," and takes cognisance of the fact that France will oppose any attack on Mesopotamia. It expresses satisfaction at the assurances that France is pursuing a policy of entente co-operation with the Allies, which is the basis of Britain's policy, and asks if the time has no come to intervene in the Greco-Turkish conflict.
