Labour Housing Policy.
A housing policy for the Labour movement was outlined at a con-i ference of the Labour Housing! Association, at Cardiff. A resolu- tion was carried demanding thei provision of houses on garden suburb principles, on the best available sites, and at the lowest possible rents, and advocating that cal authorities should be empowered to provide housing! accommodation out of the ra es with financial assistance fon Imperial sources. The Govern- ment's housing policy, with its limitation of the building pro- gramme. was severely coa- demLed:
Mr. E. L. Foulton, president of the Trades Union Congress, who presided, said that it was clear that pressure must be brought to bear on the Government to end existing housing scandal. He hoped they would make it so hot for somebody that the presen condition of things would spcedit; ly end. One of the reasons given by the Gorerument for the re- striction of the teasing pro gramme was the high cost, but that! was entirely due to the, attitude | of the Government, who had been too tender with the trusts and combines. (Cheers) They were nowilling to take action against] vested interests. The building) trade workers were being blamed for not working harder. but there was abundant proof that "rings" bad been created artificially to keep up prices, thus increasing the cost of raw materials acd making it harder for local authorities to erect houses at a reasonable cost.
Mr. George Hicks, president of the Federation of Building Oper- atives, said the anions were willing to encourage increased output in the erection of houses. but their practical proposals had not been entertained, and the Government had made political capital out of the situation.
