BOTTOMLEY LIBEL CASE.

Story of the Victory Bond Club

MR. BOTTOMLEYS CASE.

THE HONGKONG

GALLURAWH

War Bond Chuk” and can- oluded :—“ I will wager Horatio £1,000 that his draws are fakad and crooked. I maka this state- ment openly and without fear.”

The general effect of the charges regarding the Victory Bond Club was that Mr. Bot- tomley had had a million of money, principally from poar people; had kept it, himself, had faked drawn, and given prizes its a wrong way. In the broadest forms, that he had been swindling the public.

.....

There was not a word of truth in any statement by the defen- dant regarding the Victory Boods.

VICTORY BOND CLUB SCHEME,

Counsel sxplained in detail the operations of the Victory Bond) Club scheme was for bonds of which the minimum was £3. As numbers of poor people could not afford £3. Mr. Bottomley's iden was for them to come in with £1, and the club was formed. Each share therefore represented only a fractional proportion of the stock. The issue price was 85, and half a million of stock was | purchased with the £450,000 sub- scribed. The stock now stood at 75 £350,000 had been returned, so that after the sale of stock, to return that amount practically 10, full Mr. Bottomley had had per-1 sonally to put down about £35,000 already.

Counsel added that there was no need for County Court pro- ceedings Everybody desiring it would be repaid by the end of the | year.

ALLEGED ATTEMPTS AT

BLACKMAIL. Subsequently the Magistrate decided to hear counsel's state-) meat regarding the alleged attempt to extort money.

Sir Ernest detailed interviens and correspondence between Mr. Bigland and Mr. Bottomley, ex- tending over some years, and con- cerning various matters on which be relied to substantiate the allegations of attempts to extort money.
