A GRACIOUS QUEEN. It is difficult, almost impas- ible, to credit the flight of the years when thinking of Queen Alexandra. Since the death "of King Edward comparatively little has been heard of his consort, albeit her Majesty is still to the fore in works of benevolence;| but up till little more than s decade ago

Lady Paget, in ber foreword to this book, speaks of Queen Alexandra as having imprinted a certain cochet on fashion. This cachet was "great simplicity, nailed to grace and dignity." Mr. Trowbridge might perhaps have taken the hint, for there is a certain straining after grandeur. Apart from this foible, his Life, with its delightful series of portraits and photographs, is su attractive volume. We are given a pleasant sketch of the Princess! alexandra's upbringing at the Yellow Place in Copenhagen and her' parents country estate of Bernstorff in the days when her father, Prince Christian of Glucksburg, bad only just become by the London Protocal of 1852, The Heir-Presumptive to the Danish Throne.
Princess Christian expected much of her daughters. She taught them to make their own clothes, and instructed them as well in the art of housekeeping. Masters and governors were provided for the more refined accomplishroents. Muchatten- tion was paid in those days to the study of deportment. From it the Princess Alexandra acquired the extreme grace of her carriage. Her dancing and riding instructors were loud int their praise. For music she had a special talent.... She was deft, too, with her needle. A strip of ribbon in her fingers was like a wand in a magician'a band.
