ANTIQUATED CARGO-HANDLING
GEAR.
Of all the importan: English ports Liverpool has the race: antiquated cargo-handling equip. ment On the Liverpool side of the Mersey there are seven miles of docks without a singla crane. The transit shed have been placed within four feet of the water, so that there is no room to run a track between the ship and the warehouse. One reason for the delay in the introduction of
for modern appliances
the handling of cargo at Liverpool has been the attitude of the dock workers. They have insisted on the employment of the same number of men when cranes, transporters or other appliances were employed, as when oargo is put over the ship's side with * vessel's
derricks and winches. Hence
if hydraulic or electric appliances ware to be installed, the cost of delivering cargoes would remain about the same.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
OF SHIPOWNERS. United States shipowners have
owners called by the president and the council of the Chamber of Shipping of the United King- dom for November 23, 24 and 25. Shipowners from all over the world are expected to attend the conference, which will be the first to be held since the end of the war. The American Steam. |ship Owners' Associstion is con- sidering whether or not it will send & delegation to the conference. The questions that will be treated by the conference have been outlined. An agree- ment for the standardisation of charter-parties and bills of lading will be sought, while an effort will be made to fix the limitation of shipowners' liability on bills of Jading. The Imperial Shipping Committee appointed by the Chamber of Shipping in June, 1920, recommended that there be. reached an international agree ment among the shipowners to apple the principles laid down in the Charter Act and the cor- responding measures of Canada. Australia and New Zealand. This will be urged when the coa. ference is called in November. The other big questions to be treat- ed are(1) Some internations! understanding with regard to the

The V.K. Chamber of Sbipping believes that now is the most propitious time for the shipowners of the world to come to a definite understandf ing on matters which are general interest to all of the maritime Powers. At the up- proaching conference the date for an international meeting on radiotelegraphy - will be fixed. One of the objects' sought is en 8.0.8. call recognised by mil maritime nations.
