There are very few experienced advisers there is to duef in the lawyer of high standing in the Colony.
The Colonial Secretary has got well seated on his foremen be app led. It is certain he should be Acting Chief Justice on his return, and there is no doubt that he deserves the offer of Chief Justice and would be most valuable in that position, perhaps Lord Kimberley would consider it when a vacancy occurs.
I think it would be well to write to ask whether we can arrange for Sir George's retirement at once. We should press him well to accept a pension until his leave absence has been granted him expressly, but we should write officially rather than privately to Sir Forster describing his leave; the present state of Mr. Pouncefote's health is not understood to be at all unhealthy, and though hard circumstances have justified the extension of his leave, it taken together with his valuable services might justify further leave.
If he were to return back at once, he might be promised further leave next year when Sir A. Kennedy has to raz that looking to his health it will be impossible to anticipate that it will be advantageous to the Colony that he should attempt his duties again.
As it is very important that Lord Kimberley should be placed in a position to make permanent provision for the Supreme Court, his lordship will be prepared if that should meet Sir George's views to grant him...
